Geocache Description:

Tanners Point Cordyline Australis.

Turning the tide....

The residents of Tanners Point are proving that the people-power can make a difference .

The stunning pohutukawa-fringed coastline is once again humming with life after some serious restoration work combined with animal pest and weed control.

What's being done in this Community

Inspired by the New Zealand Geographic article "Silence of the fantails",  residents of Tanners Point realised that something needed to be done to make  the area safe for native birds.  A community project was born.

The project is working towards a pest free peninsula and a safe feeding and breeding environment for native birds.  It has also involved significant clearance of escaped garden plants and replanting of natives as a food source.  Already native birds have returned.   This was achieved with assistance from Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

The first three years of the project are being funded by an Environment Bay of Plenty Environmental Enhancement Funt grant.

Volunteers are always welcome to assist.

--------------------------

This walk way starts by the boat ramp at the end of Tanners Point Road and heads east along the east side of the point.   At the point the track heads along the north side to the end of Moana Drive.  From the road the track heads west down to the beach and around a small point to where the new track starts.    The new tracks works it way around the coast.    They are trying to get awalk way back to the road one day.

Part of the walk way is over boardwalk.    Over 900 plants have been planted over the last year.  this is an on going project.  Seats are to be built.
