The Old laundry building is one of the earliest buildings remaining on the estate, other than the castle itself. Early Victorian, it was built to keep up with rising standards of personal hygiene. The drying area is behind the slatted windows upstairs, although in good weather the clothes were hung on nearby bushes. Cache is not within the building.
Drum Castle was gifted to the NTS in 1975 by the Irvine family, who were given the Tower and surrounding estate in 1323 by Robert the Bruce, following a number of years service completing armour bearing and secretarial duties for his various campaigns. The family added the Cross Chamber, Jacobean Mansion House and Victorian corridor and courtyard later, to make the building more of a home and also allow the servants to move around without disturbing the main family rooms. http://www.nts.org.uk/Property/Drum-Castle-Garden-and-Estate/
