MILK BRANCH

Another cache related to the closed railways of West Wales. The Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway had ambitious plans to build a railway from Carmarthen to Cardigan by way of Pencader and Newcastle Emlyn. Bankrupted by the construction of Pencader Tunnel, the line only got as far as Llandysul in 1865. In 1881 the line was bought by the Great Western Railway. The GWR finally extended the line to Newcastle Emlyn and the station there opened in 1895.

Milk formed a large proportion of the line's traffic and it continued to serve the creamery in Newcastle Emlyn until its closure in 1973. Newcastle Emlyn and the creameries at Felinfach and Pont Llanio were the sole reason the old Carmarthen and Cardigan remained open after the final closure to passenger services in 1965 (passenger traffic to Newcastle Emlyn had ceased in 1952).

The line followed the valley of the Teifi. It is possible to see the embankment that carried the railway across the valley from the cache's location along with a small underbridge. From here the railway ran parallel with the A484 into Newcastle Emlyn with the station located on the northern side of the road. The site is now partly occupied by Ceir Castle Motors.
