Geocache Description:

It is a nice easy roadside cache with a nice view over the lagoon. The container is camouflaged. Please use stealth when doing the cache as there is lots of muggles around on bikes and other means of transport. Please bring your own pen. Please replace the cache as you found it.
 

In the warmer months please be on the lookout for snakes as they like to bask in the sun.

The Langebaan Lagoon was formed by the rising and falling of sea levels during pre-historic times. This is unlike most lagoons which form where fresh water rivers enter the sea. As a result, Langebaan Lagoon is a purely salt water lagoon. As far back as 500 000 years ago, early Homo sapiens were probably present in the area, living in groups and hunting small game, displacing carnivores, such as lions, from their kills and gathering plant foods. They made fire as protection and for cooking and probably made simple shelters from branches. They probably used animal skins for warmth and clothing. They made wooden and stone tools. Although Langebaan is well known as a coastal resort, it is not on the sea, but on the shores of a lagoon - one of South Africa's greatest natural wonders. The bright blue, sheltered stretch of water stretches south for 17 km from Saldanha Bay in the north, past Langebaan village to Geelbek at the southern end. It is 4 km wide in places. During his stay at the Cape Commander Van Riebeeck, as early as 1654, sent large vessels to the lagoon to collect up to 1600 salted penguins and bird eggs to feed the VOC slaves at the emerging colony. The Lagoon has 32% of the salt marches in South Africa. This is a highly sensitive eco-area.
