Geocache Description:

This location is where an island once stood that has now sunken beneath the water. All that remains above the water now are the fallen trees that once stood on it and the stepping stone that laid upon its' shore. See the long description for more about this vanished island and important details you will need to know before seeking this cache. A watercraft of your choosing is an absolute requirement to get to this cache.

Congrats to Larue50L for grabbing the one million dollars that was up for grabs for the first to find (the kind that cost us $1.00 at Dollar General); and a First To Find Trackable Coin.

This cache is accessible only by water. Scuba diving is NOT required to find this cache.

The cache is a pill bottle just large enough for small trackables and small swag (we had a larger green dry box but believe it or not someone actually muggled it). PLEASE REPLACE IT SO THAT IT IS OUT OF THE WATER AND HIDDEN FROM PLAIN SIGHT.  Initial approach to the location is best made from the south west to large old shoreline stepping stone.  The water there is shallow and can be approached by watercraft with shallow drafts such as canoes, kayaks, and some pontoon boats.  Approach from the north west will encounter underwater stones that may damage a propeller. Upon arrival you will need to enter the water to find this cache.  The water is normally less than 2 feet deep. With shorts on you should be ok but those who must stay dry (or little ones) would be best to wear a swim suit to reach the cache. Water shoes are also recommended (but not a must).

The owners of this cache have a canoe located on the lake near the cache. You may use this canoe to paddle out to the cache if you like. They also have an area available to launch your own kayak or canoe and park your car while on your adventure.   Please contact them via a geocaching.com message or text 317-690-1390 to see if they are available.

The Story of The Sunken Island.....

This location is all that remains of the island that was the westward mooring point of the Dixie paddle wheel boat in her early days (the same boat that still gives rides today on lake Webster). Back then the Dixie was owned by her builder, Joseph Breeck who lived on the island directly east of the cache location. After a day of work on the boat Breeck would moor her between the islands. Breeck's Island soon became known as Dixie Island because of this. However not too long ago the last remains of the island were lost to the forces of nature. Traces of the island remain...and here is where you will find this cache.

This is a old drawing of Breeck's Island (now known as Dixe Island) with the small, now lost (sunken), island showing in the background of the picture. The post card that this drawing was on misspelled Joseph Breeck's last name.

This photo was taken from Weimer's Landing to the east of Dixie Island.  The two Dixe Islands can be seen in the background.

The Dixie padde wheel boat is a favorite of tourists and locals on the lake alike and is listed on the National Register of Places. For information on the current Dixie including passenger schedules and prices go to www.ridethedixie.com.
