Geocache Description:

CONGRATULATIONS TO WOLFLING70 AND GEAUXTEAM! FOR THE FTF!

This cache was originally created by iansouthern. It has since been adopted and is currently being maintained and monitored by ckirbee.

Welcome to McDaniel Farm Park. You will be looking for a medium sized container close to one of the trails. Please be sure to bring a pen and plenty of water, and replace as you found it. It would be great to see pictures of the area during various times of the year.

McDaniel Farm Park is made up of rolling pastureland and forested areas. The open pastures were used to raise cattle and farm crops such as cotton, corn, and soybeans. Cotton was a main crop until the mid-1900s. The smaller fields on the farm were used to cultivate okra, butter beans, and other vegetables. The McDaniel’s also raised hogs and chickens, both of which were housed in the barnyard area. The fields were plowed with the family’s three mules, and the first tractor was not purchased until after World War II. Other structures on the property include a transverse-crib barn located behind the house. The first floor was used for stabling animals and the second level was used to store hay. The style of the barn indicates it was constructed after the turn of the 20th century, which replaced the original barn that was contemporaneous to the main house. In addition to the barn, there is a chicken house, a corncrib, a woodshed, a wellhouse, and a wagon shed. There are remnants of a blacksmith shop on the site as well. The property remained a working family farm until the death of Archie McDaniel in 1999. Many of the past farming tools are located throughout the property. Each is labeled as to their use. The majority were pulled by draft horses used to keep the farm in operation. As time moved on, you will also see more modern versions of machines used today. An early farm tractor sits in a barn. Various farm tools pulled by the tractor sit close by as well to aid in the fall harvests. Many fields provided staples to feed folks living on the farm as well as crops they could sell to others in the community. Preservation is important to Gwinnett County and McDaniel Farm Park is an example of such efforts.

There are two entrances to this park. If you are meeting up with someone, be sure to note which entrance to meet at. You can find the parking waypoints attached to this cache page. This historic area is a popular spot for photographers. If you approach this cache from the South Entrance, you will pass the barn. Please pay attention to the posted signs and those around you.
