In March of 2015 I noticed a string of caches in Wawayanda state park that had a note from the CO asking for help retrieving them. They did not meet the new NJ state parks and forests geocaching management policy. I had cabin fever and desperately needed to get outside, so I grabbed a muggle and set out to retrieve 6 lonely caches.
The 7 hour expedition turned out to be one of the most adventurous and exciting hikes I have ever been on. Eventually we emerged out of the park soaking wet, smelling like a swamp, and carrying 5 of the 6 caches we set out to retrieve. Each ammo can was decorated by the CO, Packanack. With his permission, I decided to re-hide these unique ammo cans so that other cachers can enjoy his artwork.
The caches are placed on Newark property to encourage more geocachers to come out and find some of the old lonely caches nearby. The trails in the area are well marked and there is plenty of parking. The property is currently managed and patrolled by the city of Newark. A permit is required to hike. One can be obtained at 223 Echo Lake Road, Newfoundland or by calling (973) 697-2850.
Please use common sense when hiking. The area is home to black bears, poisonous snakes, relentless mosquitos, and other creatures of Clinton Road lore. Hunting also permitted in season.
