Lake Hart, when full, covers an area of around 16,000 hectares, and is one of the smaller lakes that form part of the Lake Eyre basin
The basin began to form in the early Paleogene (about 60 million years ago) when south-eastern South Australia started to sink and rivers began to deposit sediment into the large, shallow basin. For many millions of years, the basin was well supplied with water and was largely forested. About 20 million years ago, large shallow lakes formed, covering much of the area for about 10 million years.
The lakes and surrounding landscapes began to dry up as the climate became warmer and arid as Australia drifted further north. The desertification was hastened due to a series of ice ages lasting up until 18,000 years ago and a salt crust began to form over its surface. This was due to powerful winds that swept up sand dunes and choking the rivers that fed the lakes.
