Geocache Description:

The [SL] series is a trail of geocaches following the abandoned Maldon - Shelbourne railway. These caches are centred around the hobby of Railway Archeology, which involves tracing the remains of abandoned railway lines. I recommend beginning the series at Maldon. For a full history of the line see the geocache page for GC5MWN5 [SL] - Shelbourne Station or GC6X3P9 [SL] - Laanecoorie Junction.

This is a three stage multi cache placed at one of the more significant railway remains on the abandoned railway. It also marks the beginning of the publicly accessible section of the old railway (or the end if you are doing this series from Maldon). From this cache you can walk all the way to the junction on the outskirts of Maldon. Heading in the opposite direction the railway is almost entirely on private property and can only be accessed or seen at former railway crossings and at the roadside.

From Bells Reef Road (where [SL] - Floodway is located) the railway passed through private property and crossed two seasonal creeks on timber bridges which were damaged in the bushfires that closed the railway.

At Waypoints 1 and 2 you are looking for bison tubes containing the coordinates for the next stages. At the final location you are looking for a large sistema container.

You can access the cache at Waypoint 1 from the railway side of the fence. Please take care when extracting and replacing the cache to ensure it is well tethered and doesn't disappear in the darkness beneath.

You do not need to enter the creek bed to access Waypoint 2 however please take care as it is near the edge of the earth embankment. The cache is in plain sight at WP2 so please do not interfere with the bridge remains whilst looking for the cache.

At Waypoint 1 you can see the remains of the first (smaller) bridge which is located on private property.

This photo shows the old railway alignment heading off towards Shelbourne, taken from the fence.
The remains of the bridge at WP2. Make sure you check out the date markings engraved into some of the old timbers.

Access to this cache is via Bells Reef Road and Forty Foot Lane. Alternatively you can access the cache from the Maldon side via Porcupine Lane and walk in from the end of the road.

Please be mindful of local wildlife and trade fairly. Have fun!

Please note that Waypoints 1 and 2 are missing. The final cache coordinates are S 36° 58.639 E 144° 05.844. This note will remain in place until I can replace the containers at WP1 and WP2.
