This cache pays tribute to the early mining efforts in the Coromandel Valley area in the 1800's.
Dotted throughout the Valley are numerous mines, mostly on private property.
The most well-known mine is the Chambers mine in Chambers gully at the southern end of Coromandel Valley, near the Weinstadl Restaurant. not too far from this cache.
In 1858 the Chambers' Mine, also called the Ben Lomond mine, was opened up to mine copper and a large one-ton block of Malachite was taken to Adelaide to be displayed. Little else was ever taken from it.
By 1908 the mine had been abandoned for several years.
Very little in the way of production records exist for this mine.
A young boy became trapped at the bottom of a shaft after he and his friends crawled into one of the adits, during the 1980’s. As a result, the adits and shafts of this mine are now back-filled.
The main part of the property is now a housing estate, thus very little evidence of this mine remains.

In the early days of mining, prospectors often turned over a few rocks to find their treasures. At GZ you will find 5 rocks, with a container hidden under one of them. Count how many rocks you need to turn over before you find the container, then post this number on your Log on geocaching.com. Ideally the lower the number the better, but please be honest.
