About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

About REALLY SideTracked - Elsham Station

Elsham is a former Railway Station on the Doncaster, Scunthorpe and Barnetby line in North Lincolnshire. The station was opened in October 1866 by the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway, and like similar stations had staggered platforms set over a level crossing. This was one of the most easterly of the stations on the line and situated just a few miles from Wrawby Junction, which then joined to the M.S. & L.R. (Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire) towards Grimsby.
The Station won many awards for it’s well tended grounds, flower beds and tubs, maintained by the Station Master Robert Swinton and Porter George Elsom. The highest “First Class Award” was given in 1966.
Downgrading of Elsham and many similar stations occurred with the introduction of Paytrains, whereby tickets did not have to be purchased from the station but from a ticket officer on the train. By 1993 the station was no longer profitable and was closed by British Rail on October 3rd of that year.
Nothing now remains of the station building except part of the old platform and a section of the coal yard to the rear. You may be interested in some of the photos on the Gallery.
The Grade II listed Signal box, timber framed with a Welsh slate roof and built in 1885 also remains, but the modern constructions on the platform and nearby herald the era of automatic signalling systems which will soon be controlled from York.
The lines which pass through here still carry a large volume of Passenger and Freight traffic in excess of 138 per day.
Children will love this cache, but please be aware that you are very close to a busy railway line and therefore must be vigilant at all times!
Please do not drive down the track from the suggested Parking area as Maintenance vehicles need access. Should you wish to continue your walk this is a very pleasant public footpath which takes you through woodland to the rear of Elsham Golf Club.
You are looking for a bison.
Pen and tweezers required.
Please replace carefully as the cache is attached
