Geocache Description:

Szabadkígyósi Wenckheim kastély

Wenckheim Castle of Szabadkígyós

The castle was built in a neo-renaissance eclectic style according to plans of Miklós Ybl between 1875 and 1879 and was consecrated on 19 July 1882. Krisztina Wenckheim asked the architect to create a harmonic design without any repeating elements. Moreover she had the desires to supply the castle with as many windows as days in a year, as many rooms as weeks in a year and as many entrances as the number of seasons. By this time the castle was the most spectacular and most up-to-date castle of its era. The representative inner space of the castle contains chapel, dining room, winter garden, library, music salon for women, smoking salon for men, workroom and bedroom with sleeping cabins.

The castle is supplied with a 23-hectare park including dendrological landscape garden with islands and bridges. The garden includes a fountain and archaic candelabra. French formal garden was created in front of the castle using boxwood and yew trees all surrounded by an English landscape garden. The central part of the French garden contains a beautiful pool with a fountain and the county's biggest plane tree to the right.

The castle's park is open every day until dusk and the visit is free of charge.

The castle itself is open on Saturdays from 10am to 3pm and on Sundays from 10am to 2pm.
