Geocache Description:

Easy and interesting stop on a rural road less traveled.

As you travel from the west or east to GZ on Polley Lane, take a good look at the signs in the sand and pebbles of the road. Not only will you see many types of wildlife tracks but you will see evidence of a simpler time in our history. Horse hoof prints, buggy tracks and horse nugget droppings grace the road.

U.S. Amish Population

West central Wisconsin is known as Amish country, and your journey here will give you a glimpse a life without automobiles, telephones and computers. Wisconsin has one of the largest Amish populations in America, with settlements all over the state. One of the larger communities is right here in Taylor County.

You may even be fortunate enough to hear and spot an approaching work wagon or family buggy ~ one horsepower for sure. It is not uncommon to see horse-drawn buggies moving down the road and colorful quilts drying in the summer breeze.

The surrounding roads in Taylor County are an interesting place to explore. Polley Lane is an Amish Super Highway. It is an escape into a simpler, quieter way of life.

The neighbors here are humble, welcoming, and industrious. Sound like Wisconsin to you? Well for Wisconsin’s Amish, it’s truly a way of life. The Amish live according to beliefs that go back to a sixteenth-century Protestant movement in Europe. While different communities have different rules, they all value humility, family, discipline, and hard work.

Because the Amish don’t seek attention, you generally won’t find listings for their businesses – especially not online. But just drive the surrounding roads and you may come across baked goods, honey, syrup and hand crafted items.

So as you slow down on this dirt road, to search for the geocache pause to think and reflect about times past.
