Welcome to

Anzac Hill - EarthCache

A simple EarthCache to bring you here and to highlight and explore landform that has formed here over the millions of years. Anzac Hill is also a Geodetic Fundamental Point for Surveyors, and levels are taken from a marker on the hill.

Vehicle access to the summit of Anzac Hill is by means of a bitumen road to the west, while the Lion's Walk, from opposite the Catholic Church in Wills Tce., is for the more energetic. Whichever way you choose to reach the summit of Anzac Hill, the view is worthwhile and provides a spectacular panorama of Alice Springs

The Anzac Hill overlooks panoramic views of the town of Alice Springs. The main ridge to the south is comprised of Heavitree Quartzite, with the townsite built on an alluvial plain up to 50m thick of recent fill. The hills in the town area are made up of Palaeoproterozoic rocks of the Hayes Metamorphic Complex. The northern end of Anzac Hill is comprised Alice Springs Granite, whereas the southern side is made up of Sadadeen Gneiss.

The basement Sadadeen Gneiss  is intruded by or has gradational contacts with the Alice Springs Granite  This suggests that the Sadadeen Gneiss and the Alice Springs Granite were both intruded during the Inkamulla Igneous Event that occured 1740–1755 Million years ago.  These two units make up many of the hills within the town of Alice Springs.

Sadadeen Gneiss is a Paleoproterozoic aged (2500 to 1600 million years ago) metamorphic rock formed by the metamorphosis of granite, or sedimentary rock. Alice Springs Granite is a Statherian period (1800 to 1600 million years ago) an igneous rock composed mostly of two minerals: quartz and feldspar. It is an intrusive rock, meaning that it crystallized from magma that cooled far below the earth's surface.
