La chiesa di San Martino di Breclema a Romagnano Sesia in provincia di Novara è tra le più antiche della zona, risale sicuramente all'XI secolo, ma recenti scavi archeologici hanno portato alla luce reperti, monete e mura risalenti in al IX secolo.
Esternamente la chiesa ha conservato caratteristiche del romanico anche se nel XVI secolo venne sostanzialmente modificata con la rotazione di 180 gradi dell’edificio che era inizialmente rivolto ad est. Attorno alla chiesa di San Martino esisteva il castrum di Breclema distrutto nel XIV secolo a seguito di vicende politiche tra il Comune di Novara e i Conti di Biandrate. Dalla distruzione si salvò la fortificazione del Castellazzo per la protezione del guado sul fiume Sesia e la chiesa di San Martino. Nel 1643 dagli atti del parroco Antonio Ragni la Chiesa di San Martino fu trasformata in lazzaretto durante una pestilenza. Nel 1693 fu rinnovato il dipinto con la Beata Vergine Maria che si trova ancora oggi sulla parete dell’altare. Pochissime sono le notizie nel Settecento e nell’Ottocento, quando la chiesa venne lasciata in completo abbandono. Dal 1996 al 2001 la Chiesa di San Martino di Breclema è stata oggetto di grossi interventi: rifacimento del tetto, nuova pavimentazione, consolidamento delle strutture e ripristino delle decorazioni. The San Martino of Breclema's Church in Romagnano Sesia in the province of Novara is one of the oldest in the area, certainly dates back to the eleventh century, but recent archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts, coins and walls dating back to the ninth century.
Externally the church has kept characteristics of Romanesque although in the sixteenth century it was substantially modified with the 180 degree rotation of the building that was originally turned to the east. Around the San Martino's there was a "castrum" called Breclema, destroyed in the fourteenth century as a result of political events between the City of Novara and the Counts of Biandrate. It was saved from destruction by the fortification of Castellazzo to protect the ford on the river Sesia and the church. In 1643 by the acts of the priest Antonio Ragni the San Martino's was turned into a hospital during a plague. In 1693 the painting with the Blessed Virgin Mary was renewed: it is still on the altar wall. There are very few news in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the church was left completely abandoned. From 1996 to 2001 the Church has undergone major interventions: new roof, new flooring, consolidation of facilities and restoration of the decorations. [Wikipedia]
