Hill 194
West of Silverstream and Heretaunga, Hill 194 rises abruptly from the Hutt River on the western escarpment of the Wellington fault West of Silverstream and Heretaunga. It towers over the river and presents stunning views up and down the valley. From the plain below it tends to blend in with the hills behind and as such is often overlooked.
It has no name that I can find on even historic maps so I have called it ‘Hill 194’ after it’s altitude label on the topographical map.
The 'Hill 194' series
This series was placed just after the area was logged and replanted. The other caches in the series are:
- Hill 194 - Silverstream overlook
- Hill 194 - One tall stump
- Hill 194 - No way
- Hill 194 - Better down than up
Access
The gravel forestry trails from the SH2 entrance can be a little muddy if wet but not too bad. There are a couple of narrow stream crossings which you can jump if it hasn't been raining too hard. You're very unlikely to encounter anyone else during your walk.
As the new pines emerge views may become compromised and gorse will become obstructive, but I’m hoping the caches will remain as this is a great uplift and not as challenging as those placed on the hills above.
