Flag Counter

Mandraġġ is an area in the southern part of Valletta on the side of Marsamxett. This area, when it was to be constructed in 1566, was meant to become a “mandracchio” meaning a sheltered area meant for the repair and maintenance of boats. With this aim in mind the order of Saint John ruled out that any rocks need to build Valletta were to be taken from this area. Another reason this area was chosen was because the rocks were less slanted towards the sea. Between 1572 and 1600 was when the construction of houses started in this now abandoned quarry. The outer circle of houses kept with the architecture of Valletta yet the inner circle of houses was built with no prior planning. - Adapted and translated from Wikipedia (https://mt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il-Mandraġġ)
