On October 17, 1885, Spartanburg's first “public” library opened.

Thanks to a gift from Mrs. Helen Fayssoux Kennedy, the Kennedy Library opened its doors on the lot where her husband's office once stood. It began with a grand total of 900 books and a $3 per year subscription fee. Her gift honored her husband, Dr. Lionel Chalmers Kennedy, a well-known and respected physician who had died five years earlier. Among the library's first holdings was Dr. Kennedy's 600-volume medical library and some 300 other books collected and donated by the citizens of Spartanburg.

The library began an explosive period of growth between 1969 and 1979. An automated circulation system became operational in 1979, making Spartanburg the first public library in a four-state area to do so. A year later, the library system loaned half a million books for the first time.

New branches were added in many surrounding communities, one of which was for the combined towns of Duncan, Wellford, and Lyman, but better known as the Middle Tyger Library.

The current Middle Tyger Library branch opened in October/November, 1996.

The first community library was opened by the Pacific Mills textile plant in the mid-1920’s in Lyman. The restored one-room library now stands behind the Town Hall in Lyman.
A new, more spacious library branch opened in Lyman in 1975-1978 on Groce Road.

The current library opened due to steady growth in population and thus demand for collections and services in School District 5 and Western Spartanburg County.

The Middle Tyger branch was renovated in February-April, 2013 and closed for 10 weeks.

One key attraction to this branch is the Town of Lyman’s River Place Park, which overlooks a beautiful waterfall on the Middle Tyger River.

It is situated less than 3 miles from Interstate 85, 4 public schools, a state vocational rehab center, 2 town halls, and the central water & waste treatment operations of SJWD Water District.

At the posted coordinates, have a seat on the bench and contemplate the following classic lines:

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

Look up high and make note of the number on the lamp post directly in front of you. Subtract 1 from this number and this will be A

For stage 2, head towards: N 34 56.412 W 082 07.374 While standing here, count the number of horizontal steel angle-iron rails on ONE SIDE of the bridge. Subtract 2 from this number and this will beB

The final coordinates are: N 34 56.32[A] W 082 07.36[B ]

Please keep in mind that while you are searching for this container, the muggle-factor is ever-present!
