La fontaine du lion d'or a été l'objet de culte durant la période celtique, elle est à l'origine de la fondation de Malestroit. Elle est collée à l'église Saint-Gilles, le patron de la commune de Malestroit. L'église Saint-Gilles date du xie siècle et a été en partie détruite le 10 septembre 1592. Toute la partie nord de l'édifice a été ajoutée lors de la reconstruction, ainsi que des statues animalières (bœuf, lion, aigle).
