Geocache Description:

SideTracked caches are not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. They are just a distraction for the weary geocaching traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too.

This cache has been set near to the site of Ampthill Station. The cache is not located located on railway property but is only a short stroll from the former station.

Ampthill railway station was built over a mile from the town of Ampthill in Bedfordshire by the Midland Railway in 1868 on its extension to London St Pancras. It opened on 15th July 1968. It became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway during the Grouping of 1923.  After passing on to the London Midland Region of British Railways upon nationalisation in 1948, it was then closed by the British Transport Commission on 4 May 1959.

Trains on the Midland Main Line, electrified through the former station, still pass the site between Flitwick and Bedford. About half a mile north of the station is Ampthill Tunnel, increased to three bores when the line was upgraded to four tracks in 1891. The station building is still in situ, but is now a private house. The goods shed also remains and is incorporated in to an industrial unit.

The cache is a magnetic pot of around 150ml. It contains a log. It is large enough for Gecocoins and small travel bugs. It also has room for a few items of swag for trading.

The published coordinates are for the station building. There is no cache there!

The actual cache is located at:

North 52 01.(60532)(4468+69800)(69800) West 000 30.(69799)(60007-4470)(60532)
