Welcome to
Decaying Defences - Queenscliff
Please note that the LAST section of this Wherigo (before final GZ) is Tide Sensitive - best to wait when the tide is low - unless you like getting wet.
A simple Wherigo highlighting what remains of our coastal defence emplacements at Lonsdale Bight, Crows Nest and Shortland's Bluff, in Queenscliff. This tour will take you on an exploration through these locations and show what remains are still visable and explorable
Ever since the first colony in Victoria was established near modern-day Sorrento, defense locations have shaped the use and non-use of the bay. England was often at war with other countries, and her colonies often felt themselves as potential targets for aggressors.
Since the onset of the Crimean War between Britain and Russia from 1853-56 and continuous tensions, fortification of the heads and the region have been put in place to deter any potential attacks from those early colonial days up to the end of WWII in 1945
Also, the discovery of gold in the 1850s promoted major concern that a hostile vessel could enter the bay and hold the colony to ransom and so by the end of the 1890's fortifications and armaments around here, and the Heads, made Port Phillip one of the most heavily defended harbours in the British Empire.

The remains of these installations are still here today and date from as early as the 1880s and up to the end of the early 1940s. These areas are still great to explore so please take your time in exploring each zone and hopefully you'll discover and recognize any of the features that remain today.
After you've completed this tour, you will then be given the coordiantes for the cache.
