RISERVA NATURALE ORIENTATA DI CAVAGRANDE
Secondo Sito delle Piscine naturali Percorso Carrubbela-Prisa




La riserva, istituita con Decreto dell'Assessorato Territorio e Ambiente della Regione Sicilia del 14 marzo 1984, nasce come riserva naturale orientata alla conservazione della vegetazione naturale, al ripristino della vegetazione forestale mediterranea ed alla difesa ed incremento della fauna mediterranea. Cava Grande del Cassibile, come tutte le "cave" degli Iblei, è costituita da un profondo canyon che l'erosione fluviale, in concomitanza al sollevamento orogenetico, ha inciso nelle formazioni calcareo-marnose di età cretacico-miocenica, che caratterizzano il territorio. Nonostante la severità dell'ambiente, l'uomo da tempi immemorabili ha sempre vissuto nella cava e da essa tratto sostentamento. Ne sono testimonianza: i resti di costruzioni rurali dirute, le vaste recinsioni con muri a secco, le tracce dei coltivi abbandonati.



Il territorio è caratterizzato essenzialmente dall'altipiano costituito da rocce formatesi in ambiente marino e innalzate in blocco nella posizione attuale, tant'è che l'originaria successione stratigrafica non è interessata da vistose pieghe. I litotipi che affiorano sono i calcari e le alternanze calcarenitico-marnose della "Formazione Palazzolo", in alto, e le marne grigio-azzurre della "Formazion Tellaro", in basso; nell'insieme le due formazioni hanno un'età che va dal Miocene medio al Miocene sup.: da circa 15 a circa 6 milioni di anni fa. L'altipiano, dal momento della sua emersione, è stato successivamente solcato e scavato dall'acqua, che ha creato quella profonda incisione conosciuta come Cava Grande del Cassibile. Nel tratto terminale il fiume Cassibile, l'antico Cacyparis, attraversa la pianura costiera, formata da alluvioni - costituite da limi, sabbie, ghiaie, conglomerati e calcareniti giallastre - di età Quatemaria, poggianti sulle locali formazioni mioceniche. Scarse le conoscenze sulle grotte di natura carsica di questo ambiente, tipiche invece dell'area di Pantalica.



Bellissime, invece, le forme del carsismo superficiale: vaschette, impronte, vacuoli, docce d'erosione cioe le suddette PISCINE NATURALI Importanti non solo perché testimoniano l'attività del fenomeno carsico, permettendo di supporre il suo sviluppo in profondità. Si segnalano anche alcuni inghiottitoi. Il Cassibile, il corso d'acqua che scorre sul fondo valle, è in effetti alimentato dalle acque di diversi torrenti, che hanno origine fra la contrada Baufl e l'abitato di Testa dell'Acqua; essi confluiscono in un unico corso detto Manghisi che, dopo la zona denominata prisa, cambia il nome in fiume Cassibile.
Come generalmente avviene in tutte le cave "iblee", come in questo caso, la vegetazione è esuberante e ricca di specie per l'elevato gradiente di umidità (dovuta soprattutto alla stessa traspirazione vegetale), per la concomitanza di fattori microclimatici e microambientali favorevoli, nonché per fattori biodinamici.

CARSISMO
La parola "Carso" (Kars) deriva da Karra che significa pietra, ma ha originato nel corso dei tempi diversi altri suoi derivati, oltre ad aver dato il nome al territorio ubicato sul confine fra l'Italia e la ex Iugoslavia dove sono stati effettuati i primi sistematici studi sul carsismo.
Le rocce solubili sono principalmente i carbonati (calcari e dolomie) e le evaporiti (gessi e anidriti), entrambi presenti in Sicilia in diversi settori dell'isola.
Un paesaggio "carsico" si differenzia da altri paesaggi naturali per la presenza di particolari micro e macro morfologie, quali scannellature (karren), vaschette, doline, polye, inghiottitoi e grotte, generate prevalentemente dall'azione corrosiva delle acque.

Le principali aree carsiche della Sicilia in affioramenti calcarei, sono:
- area carsica degli Iblei
- area carsica delle Madonie
- area carsica dei monti di Palermo
- area carsica dei monti del Trapanese
- area carsica dell'Agrigentino
- area carsica dei Nebrodi

A-per erosione della pietra circostante lasciando un blocco
B-dal distacco del medesimo da una sezione superiore della cava durante un movimento di orogenesi depositandosi sul fondo della gola
C-posizionamento artificiale per questioni tecniche di gestione dell'area

Little is known about the karst caves in this environment, instead of the typical Pantalica.

KARSTIFICATION
