The green parrot is the symbol of Norfolk Island National Park and a conservation success story.
In 1790, Green Parrots were so common that convicts used sticks to drive them from the ripening corn. By 1983 there were only 16 birds known to be in the wild and the Norfolk Island National Park commenced a program of captive-breeding and habitat management to save it from extinction. A population of approximately 250 birds may now be present across the Island.
Listen for their characteristic ‘kek-kek-kek’ call and keep your eyes out for this parrot’s bright green feathers, red crown-patch and blue-edged wings.
