Tear down that wall! And bring some of it to Manhattan.
Over the years, I have gotten to see things that I would not have known about, if it wasn't for geocaching. On more than one occasion, I have been pleased to find a geocache that was placed near something interesting or cool. I hope this winds up being the same type of situation for some of you.
The fall of the Berlin Wall began on November 9, 1989. This was the beginning of the German reunification that formally concluded 339 days later on October 3, 1990. October 3rd each year is now German Unity Day.
The parts of the wall that were not ground up when the wall came down have been given to various institutions around the world. There are at least four segments of the wall on display in New York City. This particular segment used to be on display down the block in Paley Park, which is still worth checking out if you are nearby. It now resides in the lobby of 520 Madison Avenue, which is just 155 feet up the block from the cache.
The cache is located on the NW corner of E. 53rd Street and Madison Avenue. GPS reception in NYC can always be spotty, but the location and hint should make this an easy grab, although you will need to be stealthy at times. Please return the cache to the exact spot where you found it so it will hopefully last for a good amount of time.
After signing in, head up the block 155 feet at a waypoint of 300 degrees and enter the lobby at 520 Madison. Shouldn't be hard to spot once you are inside. The lobby is accessible from the entrance on E. 53rd Street. Occasionally the lobby is closed in the evenings, however it is my understanding that it is open most of the time.
