Der Pirat und Kaufmann Amaro Rodriguez Felipe, genannt Amaro Paro (1678 - 1747) wurde in La Laguna geboren und besaß auf der Insel mehrere Häuser. Er trieb Sklavenhandel mit den amerikanischen Kolonien und betätigte sich auch als Seeräuber. Sowohl er, als auch seine Eltern, sind in La Laguna in der Kirche Sto. Domingo de Guzman beerdigt. Ihre Epitaphe kann man dort heute noch sehen.
Man geht davon aus, dass er als junger Mensch andere Piraten in kanarischen Gewässern erlegt hat, denn die Inseln waren vom 15. bis zum 18. Jh. Tummelplatz vieler französischer, britischer und niederländischer Piraten. Diese hatten es vor allem auf spanische Schatzschiffe abgesehen. Der Franzose Jean Fleury hat zum Beispiel den Schatz des Montezuma, den Cortéz in Mexico in seine Gewalt gebracht haben soll, erbeutet.
Ein Teil dieses Schatzes ist jedoch in den Bergen von Teneriffa verschollen.

The pirate and businessman Felipe Amaro Rodriguez, called Amaro Paro (1678 - 1747) was born in La Laguna on the island and he had several houses. He committed slave trade with American colonies and he was also a redoubtable pirate. He and his parents are buried in La Laguna in the Church Sto. Domingo de Guzman. Their epitaphs can still be seen there today.
One assumes that he has killed other pirates in the Canarian waters, because from the 15th to the 18th century the islands had been stomping grounds or many French, British and Dutch pirates. They were mainly looking for Spanish treasure ships. The Frenchman Jean Fleury for example captured the Treasure of Cortéz , theTreasure of Montezuma.
A part of this treasure, however, is lost in the mountains of Tenerife.
