Geocache Description:

[Eng]

The cache was a big rubberbox near the location of the Corfu Donkey Rescue (CDR) but today it seems to be a small film canister. It is always available but the preferred time is from 10:00am to 4:00pm when the rescue is open. Please do not visit the cache by night while the animals are sleeping.

Why this cache?

[Eng]

During our holiday we visited this place twice by car. It was a highlight to see all these donkeys, dogs and cats living together in perfect harmony. Therefore we decided that this might be a good place for a cache to show you this nice place where you can chill, get close contact to all animals, comb the donkeys hair and get new friends.

So if you decide to visit the institution when you have found the cache please tell Judy that you are a Geocacher. She has not known this hobby until we explained it to her and she would be very proud if you visit her animals.

It is not a must but it would be very nice if you add a picture from one of the animals (donkey, dog, cat, horse, ...) to your log and tell me the name of the animal and why you have choosen this one for the picture.

It started with one..............

Hope was the first rescue in January 2004, Dusty the second.
Since then over 500 donkeys have been taken into the refuge here in Corfu. The shelter was founded by Judy Quinn, an Englishwoman who had moved to the Island of Corfu. Seeing the plight of the abandoned and unwanted donkeys, she was moved to help.

As a refuge they aim to give:

  • the old a safe and happy retirement;
  • the sick a chance of cure;
  • the injured the chance of recovery;
  • the abused the chance of regaining trust and hope and
  • the abandoned the feeling of security again.

Taking care of the unwanted and abandoned donkeys on the island is also effectively stopping the transport of Corfu donkeys for slaughter in Italy.
