< Kuramae Bridge >
The Yotsume River runs in the center of Nakatsugawa-juku. The town looks totally flat, but the small area around Honjin was raised a little so that Honjin was kept safe when the Yotsume River was in flood and the water came into the town. The river is very steep and causes frequent flood, and they actually had a fatal flood in 1932.
Kuramae Bridge is one of the bridges over the Yotsume River. This area is called Kuramae, that literally means "in front of granary," since there used to be a line of rice granaries here.

中津川宿のもうひとつの川の橋から、町を眺めてみましょう。
＜倉前橋＞
中津川宿のほぼ中央に、四ツ目川が流れています。ほぼ平に見える中津川宿ですが、実は本陣のあった辺りはほんの少し高くなっており、万が一四ツ目川が決壊しても、本陣は守られるようになっていました。四ツ目川は勾配が大きく洪水の多い川で、昭和７年の氾濫では死者も出る被害が出ています。
倉前橋は、四ツ目川に掛かる橋のひとつです。この辺りはかつて近郷の米蔵が建ち並ぶ町だったことから倉前の名で呼ばれているそうです。
