How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This event cache aims to introduce geocachers to another, albeit unusual, hobby which ties in quite nicely with geocaching -- unicycling.

Unicycling and geocaching -- are you mad!?

Now it is probably fair to say that most people associate unicycles (often called one-wheel bikes) with the circus and juggling acts -- I did when I started -- but unicycling is a sport in itself, with many different disciplines:

  • Trials
  • Street
  • Flatlands
  • Unicycle hockey
  • Unicycle basketball
  • Mountain unicycling
  • Freestyle
  • Riding/touring

Unicycles can also be useful (once you can ride them that is!) for getting from one geocache to the next, and being both quicker and more fun than walking (and take up less space than a bike), can help you get to more geocaches in less time.

The event cache

You're invited to attend this event cache to have a go, and to see how your fellow cachers go, riding on one wheel. I'll have some experienced riders on hand to help you out, along with a collection of unicycles (thanks to the ACT Unicycle Riders Society), so come along and experience riding on one wheel.

There will be the opportunity for the usual event cache activity of discovering and swaping trackable items with other cachers, and there is a large car park nearby.

The event cache will start at 13:30 and run until 14:30, so if you are in to combining your hobbies, this cache will run on nicely from 'GC5ZKCT: Springbank Island Spring Preview'.

Safety

While unicycling isn't as dangerous as most people think, and I haven't done any worse damage to myself doing mountain unicycling and unicycle hockey, than what I did learning to ride a bike as a kid. However, there is still a risk.

Bring a bike helmet, at least, if you intend on giving it a go. I'd also recommend wearing jeans/long trousers as a pedal strike to the shins/calfs is reasonably common, and also gloves and/or knee guards if you don't like grazed skin. Although grazed skin is less likely with people supporting you as you ride.

Weather

Check the cache listing/logs on the Saturday (29th) / Sunday (30th), as this event cache may be cancelled if the weather is bad. I'll try to get a note up either way on the Friday night.

Additional Hints (Decrypt)

[Check the cache listing/log entries on Saturday (29th) or the Sunday (30th) to see if the event has been cancelled or not due to weather.] [You'll need a bike helmet to try unicycling.] [Jeans/long trousers are handy in case of pedal strike to the shin/calf.] [Gloves and knee protection are handy to protect against grazed skin, although this is less likely if you have people supporting you while riding.]
