Geocache Description:

Slow Down, take time to have a break, look around the village, across the green, look at the fantastic views

The village of Melmerby sits at the base of the Pennine Fells. Name as Melmor after a 9th century Danish ruler. For hundreds of years it is known as a agricultural centre, with farms built on prehistoric or medival settlements. The green has always been the focus of village life, with many traditional customs, incl Queen of the May, Cumberland wrestling using sheeps knuckle bones! Also in the past Melmerby was alive with industry, inns, blacksmiths, shoemakers, tailors, all supporting the farming and mining communities.  There is wildlife with plenty of frogs, owls, herons and wonderful Red squirrels. Plus a meadow of grasses, marigolds and more. If you are passing through be it by car, motorbike, slow down, pull over or if you on a bicycle completing the Pennine cycle route or heading to complete the big climb over Hartside. A nano sized cache, have care plenty of muggles about!
