Geocache Description:

Tartu kirikute aardesari kutsub teid külastama erinevaid Tartu kirikuid. Mõned neist saavad just praegu katusele uhket vaskplekki. Mõned on just ilmalikust kasutusest vabanenud. Mõned peidavad end väikestes majades keset elurajoone, teised on uhkete tänapäevaste ehitustega pilku püüdmas. Karlova koguduse sünniaastaks peetakse 1913. aastat. Loa ja õnnistuse kiriku ehituseks andis ülempiiskop 17. aprillil 1914. aastal. Kiriku nurgakivi sisse pandi tsinkkastike püha inimese säilmetega ja vaskplaat, millel seisis, et nurgakivi on pandud keiser Nikolai II valitsemise ajal 27. mail 1914 Riia ja Miitavi ülempiiskopi Ioanni poolt.Kahekorruselist kirikut ehitati aastatel 1914-1918. Alumise kiriku altarid pühtiseti 1914ndal aastal. Peakirik õnnistati sisse 1918. a. 21. aprillil. Kiriku juurde kujunes välja 2 pihtkonda ja seetõttu peeti jumalateenistusi eraldi eesti ja vene keeles.

Kirik natsionaliseeriti 1940. a. Pärast seda kasutasid seda laohoonena Tartu Ülikool ja Eesti Rahva Muuseum. Viimased suuremad restaureerimistööd kirikus olid seotud tornide viltuvajumisega. 1995. aastal tagastati kirik kogudusele. Kirik taaspühitseti 2003.a suvel. Kirikus tegutseb Tartu Pühade Aleksandrite kogudus. [Aleksandri koguduse aare]

NB! Väga suur mugude oht!

NB! Taga, mitte sees (aare pole veekindel)

The treasure series of Tartu churches invites you to visit various churches in Tartu. Some of them are getting a fancy copper sheet on the roof right now. Some have just been released from secular use. Some are hiding in small houses in the middle of the residential area, others are eye-catching with gorgeous modern constructions.

1913 is considered the birth year of Karlova parish. The permission and blessing for the construction of the church was given by the archbishop on April 17, 1914. Inside the cornerstone of the church was placed a zinc box with the remains of a holy person and a copper plate stating that the cornerstone was laid during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II on May 27, 1914 by Archbishop Ioannis of Riga and Miitav. The two-story church was built in 1914-1918. The altars of the lower church were consecrated in 1914. The main church was blessed in 1918. on April 21. 2 denominations developed at the church and therefore services were held separately in Estonian and Russian.

The church was built mainly with the support of donations. Tartu got a spacious two-story church with five altars and special acoustics designed by the architect of the Livonian Governorate, Vladimir I. Lunski. The appearance of the building combines historicism and art nouveau style, which is unique in the entire Estonian architectural landscape and even in the Baltic countries. The church building has been in the Estonian National Register of Cultural Monuments since 1997.

The church was nationalized in 1940. After the Second World War, during the Soviet era, the Alexander Church was closed. In 1964, the church was emptied from the inside. The building was given to the University of Tartu library as a fund repository, from 1984 the building was used by the then National Ethnographic Museum of the Estonian SSR (now the Estonian National Museum) as a repository for Finno-Ugric exhibits, the lower church hall was given to Adventists and Methodists for joint use by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR.

The church was returned to the congregation on December 24, 2002. The main altar of the church was re-consecrated in 2003 by Metropolitan Stefanus of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church in honor of all Saint Alexanders. From the same year, the church and congregation are called Tartu Pühade Alexanderite Church and EAÕK Tartu Pühade Alexanderite Parish.

An active and youthful congregation operates in Tartu Saint Alexander Church. Services are held every Saturday evening and Sunday morning, during the week on major church holidays. The church is also open every weekday from 12:00 to 14:00 for pilgrims and just curious [GP&Postimees]
