Geocache Description:

Hoddles Crossroads is a locality in the Southern Highlands of NSW, Australia, in Wingecarribee Shire. It is located at the junction of the Hume Highway and Illawarra Highway.  It was formerly known as The Cross Roads.

The Illawarra Highway stretches from Albion Park (Wollongong) in the east to this cross road junction in the west. It incurs some name changes along the way to accomodate the locality in which it is located.

I travel this road quite regularly and I came to realise that this stretch of road has very few caches despite the thousands of locations for one! So, I decided to start placing caches so that others can travel through the beutiful Southern Highlands.

This cache is located off the Illawarra HIghway prior to getting to the cross roads. There is plenty of parking nearby and the cache is a short walk away. Once you locate the cache, please take the time to relocate it where you found it. You will need a pen and the cache is suitable for small swops and trackables.

From what I can establish, these cross roads were named after Robet Hoddle.

Robert Hoddle was a surveyor of Port Phillip District in the 1830s, and the creator of the Hoddle Grid, the street grid system upon which inner city Melbourne is based. He was also an accomplished artist and depicted scenes of the Port Phillip region as well as New South Wales. Hoddle was one of the earliest-known European artists to capture images of Ginninderra, an area now occupied by Canberra, Australia's National Capital.
