Den 10 maj 1945, två dagar efter den tyska kapitulationen i Norge, sändes i "Operation Doomsday" flera tunga flygplan av typen Short Stirling ifrån Royal Airforce's 190 skvadron med med britiska trupper ombord till Norge, där de skulle säkra flygplatsen i Gardermoen och övervaka tilbakadragandet av de tyska trupperna. Över Nordsjön, sex mil ifrån den norska kusten,möttes flygplanen av kompakt molnighet. De flesta flygplan återvände då till England medan tre fortsatte till Norge.
Ett av planen, Short Stirling LJ899, med 17 soldater och 6 besättningsmän ombord, flög rakt österut utan att komma i kontakt med Gardermoen eller kunna bestämma sin position. Till slut började motorn krångla på högre höjd och piloten, Flight Officer Eric Atkinson, tvingades att flyga lägre och till slut nödlanda på sjön Röjden, vid norsk-svenska gränsen.
Bakre delen av flygplanskroppen träffade vattenytan först och bröts av meden resten gled fram mot stranden och stannade på grunt vatten, när ena vingen slagit i en tall. Fyra soldater drunknade vid nödlandningen och hittades inte förrän dagarna efter kraschen.
De omkomna var:

Cpl James McAra Davidson (32 år)
Cpl John Pearl (31 år)
Pte Duncan Anthony Connolly (19 år)
i King's Own Scottish Borderers som var del av brittiska 1st Airborne Division. Soldaterna begravdes i en stor internationell ceremoni den 16 maj 1945 på Fryksände kyrkogård, innan deras stoft 1961 flyttades till Kvibergs kyrkogård i Göteborg.
Även de andra två Short Stirling-plan som fortsatte till Norge kraschade, ett i Sørkedalen utanför Oslo och ett strax söder om Gardermoens flygfält. Totalt omkommer denna dag 48 allierade soldater.
Till minnet av de omkomna i flyplanskraschen vid Röjden restes 2014 ett monument och en infotavla vid platsen för nödlandningen vid Röjdens strand. I närheten av monumentet finns en fin badplats med fikabord och lite längre ett vindskydd och utedass efter Finnskogsleden.

On 10th may 1945, two days after the German troops in Norway surrendered, several heavy Short Stirling planes of the Royal Airforce 190th Squadron where send to Norway in "Operation Doomsday", transporting British troops that should secure the airfield at Gardermoen and supervise the disarmament of the German troops. About 60km west of the Norwegian coast the planes met heavy clouds and most of the planes turned back to England.
Only three planes continued and one of them, Short Stirling LJ899, carrying 17 airborne soldiers and 6 crew members, continued straight eastwards without getting in contact with Gardermoen or being able to confirm its position when seeing the terrain through the clouds. After getting stalling problems with the motors, the pilot Flight Officer Eric Atkinson was forced to fly lower and finally decided for an emergency landing on lake Röjden, right at the Swedish-Norwegian border. The back of the plane broke off and sank, when it hit the water while the rest of the plane continued towards the beach where it stopped in shallow water after crashing one wing into a pine tree.
Four soldiers died in the crash and were not found until some days later. Their names where:

of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, as part of the Royal 1st Airborne Division. The soldiers where buried the 16thmay 1945 in an international ceremony at the Fryksände cemetery, but moved to Kvibergs cemetery in Gothenburg in 1961.
Even the other two Short Stirling-planes that continued to Norway crashed that day, one in at Sørkedalen near Oslo and one right south of the Gardermoen airfield. 48 allied soldiers died that day.
In 2014 a monument in memory of the soldiers and an information sign was raised at the location of the plane crash at the beach of Röjden. In the surroundings a nice beach with changing rooms and picnic table, as well as a windshelter and outhouse of the Finnskogsleden-trail can be found.
