Hells Kitchen Series - The Dishwasher
This EC is aimed at the little ones to help get them interested in EC's and learn how they work. so if you are caching with little ones please let them have a go and learn something new
Waterfalls often form in the upper stages of a river or more inland from the ocean where the river flows over bands of different types of rock. It erodes (the term that is used when rock is worn away) soft rock more quickly than hard rock (Think of taking a sponge and a piece of rubber the same size and rub them on rough concrete - the sponge will fall apart and disappear faster than the rubber - in the same way the softer rock well break apart and be washed away by the river than the harder rock). This may lead to the creation of a waterfall as the soft rock erodes more and more under the hard rock a cave like formation could form if the overhang is strong and long enough (a overhang is the piece of the hard rock that is sticking out past the soft rock.
See the image below to better explain it

Over time the overhang will collapse and fall into the plunge pool (the place where the water lands at the bottom of the waterfall) leaving the fallen rocks at the bottom of the falls. This will cause the softer Rock to become exposed a bit more and the erosion of it will start again. This will happen over and over again making the water fall over a long time slowly move up river. As this happen the place where the waterfall was in the past leaves a gorge usually with steep sides

Now that you know how the water fall is formed you will need to answer the questions below to claim the earthcache
1) When you are at the water fall can you see a overhang with a cave like formation behind it?
2) At the bottom of the falls can you see any rocks if so where do you think they came from
3) If you scrape a rock from the top of the water fall against the rocks on the bottom - which is harder?
4) Are the rocks in the river smoother or rougher than those outside of the river? Why do you think that is?
5) This is optional - take a photo of yourself / your team at the falls and post it with your found it log
Please send your answers to geocache.nb@gmail.com or send them via the Geocaching messaging or email within 14 days of logging your find
