Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Parish church of St Andrew Apostle and Martyr Broadhembury. East Devon

Part of the Church Micro Series: Church Micro 8239...Broadhembury St Andrew Apostle and Martyr

The Parish church of St Andrew Apostle and Martyr was consecrated
in 1259 but the earliest visible fabric are the decorated nave windows.

The nave dates from the 14th Century with the South aisle dating from the 15th Century and the porch dating from the 16th Century

As with many parish churches at the time a long sequence of restoration work including a major programme was begun in 1845 which involved the rebuilding of the chancel, the addition of the vestry, the rebuilding of the west gallery as a private pew and general refurbishment.

The church in its present form is contructed mostly from flint knodules with Beerstone dressings with some volcanic stone windows and dressing which date from the 19th Century.

Plan: Nave, chancel, west tower, 5-bay south arcade (one bay to the chancel), north porch, north-east vestry.

Angustus Monytague Toplady was appointed preist in charge in 1768 and he is famous as the composer of the hymn
'Rock of Ages'.

The church is open most days in the summer and if you have time is well worth a visit.

Internally you will find
a number of white marble wall tablets from the 18th and 19th Century commemorate members of the Drewe family (who still own and live in the village today).
A kneeling knight flanked by paired Corinthian columns is condidered by many to represents Sir Thomas Drewe of Grange (the original owners of the village - but not the same family!)

The church also boast some very fine stained glass with the westernmost window in the aisle signed Heaton Butler and Bayne and dated 1901. The east windows in the chancel and aisle are by the same maker, probably Wailes, and circa 1850. On the north side the pulpit window is by Hardman, and the other stained glass window, with a memorial date of 1871, probably Powell.

See if you can spot the Holy water stoup in the porch?

The church is hung with 6 bells and interestingly it is a reverse ring. (A reverse ring is where the bells are "rung" in an anticlockwise direction as apposed to the usual clockwise direction)

Apparently so village folklore says there a tunnel that leads from the vestry in the church to our holiday home...how about that!
