Geocache Description:

This tranquil and tucked away little chapel marks it's 700th year in 2015.

We hope you enjoy your visit as much as we did when setting this cache.

The image above is celebrating four local churches 700 years in 2015. Fretherne church, Haresfield,

St. John the Baptist's is Late 13th C and consists of nave and chancel.

The church has a very unusual bellcote above the chancel arch and with a small octagonal stone spire, as well as small octagonal pinnacles on the four sides.

Small iron crosses were added to these pinnacles in 1870-71 when Francis Niblett restored the church. He also added the south porch at this time, and a few years later, the south vestry. The nave has a blocked north doorway. The interior walls of the church are limewashed.

The beautiful font is Transitional Norman. It consists of a plain circular bowl on thirteen clustered shafts with small bell-shaped capitals.

There is a contemporary stained glass east window in the church by Edward Payne, 1981. The west window is also by Edward Payne, 1985.

In the churchyard is the octagonal base and the lower part of the tapering shaft of a medieval cross. There is also a fine collection of Early 18th C chest tombs.
