Geocache Description:

The Spirit Quest (SQ) series began in Indiana in 2004. Cache owners often research stories behind them A pioneer cemetery is "a cemetery where there have been twelve or fewer burials in the preceding fifty years." (Iowa Code 331.325) This cache is placed in honor of one such cemetery. The cache is within 2 miles of the cemetery but not in or near it.

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE GIVEN COORDINATES.

You will need to solve the puzzle to find the actual coordinates.

Welcome to the University of Iowa Hawkeye GeoArt caches!

This is a collection of 125 puzzle caches of varying degree of difficulty. Some of the puzzles might be more challenging and some are easy enough to be solved by anyone from the other two state universities (Just kidding, Iowa has 3 fantastic state universities). ;-) Hopefully everyone will find something that they enjoy. Geocheckers will be provided on some, but not all, of the caches. All caches are within 4 miles of the given coordinates. Permission was obtained for deviation from the suggested 2-mile radius due to permit restrictions and housing density in the area surrounding the geoart.

Good luck and have fun!

Johnson County’s Poor Farm and Asylum was established in 1855 to provide a more dignified and humane treatment of the poor and mentally challenged. The farm both provided for the residents needs and was a source of daily activity/work. Although it was an improvement over previous options, the standards of care still fell far short of what is understood and available today. In 1886 the Johnson County Home building, a 3-wing bring facility, was constructed and remained in operation until 1966. In 1886 the County Home building, a three-wing brick facility, was constructed and became home for poor farm residents for the next 80 years.

The image below is from the cemetery which is currently located in a grove of trees in the middle of a farm field. It is sadly overgrown and only a solitary cross stands in the middle. None of the graves are marked.  The image is part of the puzzle, however,  you WILL NOT NEED to visit the cemetery to find the cache. If you choose to visit, the cemetery is on public property at the coordinates below.
