Geocache Description:

On the outskirts of Oake placed not too far from a nearby footpath - so a short stray from the path if you are out for a walk but it is also accessible as a simple drive by cache if you have taken the car out for a spin (don't be put off by the no through road sign as there is plenty of turning room!)

This cache has been placed to celebrate our parents recent move to the village of Oake and to this beautiful part of the country. We noticed that Oake and its surroundings are not awash with geocaches so we thought we'd test the waters with this cache and hope there are some cachers out there to find it! We like to think in time this cache will be the first of many.

Situated 5 miles to the west of Taunton the village of Oake was mentioned in 897 in the Codex Diplomaticus Aevi Saxonici manuscripts as Acon, based on the early presence of oak trees. It's next historical reference is in the Doomsday Book of 1086 where it's name has become Acha. From the Saxon times it formed part of the manor of Taunton Deane which belonged to the Bishop of Winchester.
