Geocache Description:

Steam to Strzelecki  Railway Series (S2SRS)

The Strzelecki railway from Koo Wee Rup was a broad gauge branch line, running 30.5miles (approx. 50 km).  The railway crossed the Koo Wee Rup swamp, then followed the Lang Lang River valley, and steeply climbed the ranges to Strzelecki.  It passed through 23 cuttings and 2 major trestle bridges.

There were eight stations; Bales, Catani, Yannathan, Heath Hill, Athlone, Topiram, Triholm and Strzelecki.  The railway was built to service the farming communities and the logging industry.

Construction began in 1915 on the first of three sections, 13 miles from Koo Wee Rup to Heath Hill.  Construction was delayed due to World War I.  The second section of 12 miles to Triholm commenced after the war.  The final section to Strzelecki was completed in 1922, 7 years after construction began, a total cost of £ 303,522.

The line was very short lived.  The mountain section closed in 1930 as the railway proved to be financially unviable.  In addition to this, the trestle bridge was very unstable.  There were reports of the train crew crawling across the trestle bridge, and the train being sent across the bridge with the brake on and no crew on board.

In 1941 the line was closed at Yannathan, then at Bales in 1950.  The line was completely closed in 1959.  The remains of the train line is mostly now on private land, with the exception of Clifton Road, Lyon’s Road and McCraw’s Road which were partly built on the train line.

Ramsay, M., (1991).Steam to Strzelecki: The Koo Wee Rup to Strzelecki Railway

Along the flats and what was a swamp, there are only minimal remains of the Yannathan Station to the north of the road.  From the station the train line can be seen to cross the road and across the flats to Heath Hill on the south side of the road.  At GZ the train formation is visible on both sides of the road.

You are looking for a long tube, but not suitable for swaps.

Congratulations gruffpuppy for FTF
