Off the Beaten Path Traditional Cache

Not too long ago, this was part of the route taken by the Long Path, as it passed through Orange County, New York. The Long Path has been relocated to avoid the confusing jumble of roads it followed. These days the trail is known as the Western Ridge trail. The Long Path still crosses Schunnemunk, but does not make its way along the western ridge.

Both the eastern ridge and western ridge of Schunnemunk Mountain both offer great views and a good workout. Many hikers tend to stick to the eastern ridge, as many of the trail heads offer easier access to that ridge. There is a small hiker's parking area along Clove road made available by Hilmar Lodge. This offers perhaps the best access to the western ridge , but like the eastern ridge, you have your work cut out for you to hit the ridge line. Enjoy your hike and the views.
