Geocache Description:

The Lord of the Rings was filmed in New Zealand and Sir Peter Jackson took advantage of the spectacular and beautiful forest and river scenery at Kaitoke Reserve to create movie scenes. After leaving Rivendell the newly formed Fellowship of the Ring headed south and then started to climb the Misty Mountains. In this company was the hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck, better known to his friends as Merry.

Remember to bring a pen.

Merry was an organised hobbit and a bit of a prankster. As a conspirator along with other hobbits he became aware of the ring of power and prepared horses and other equipment to aid Frodo's escape from the Shire to Bree. There they met up with the mysterious Aragorn and crossed the wilds to Rivendell. In his time at Rivendell he studied maps and was preparing to return to the Shire. But Gandalf was impressed by the hobbits loyalty and persuaded Elrond to let the two younger hobbits join the new fellowship in their quest to head south to Gondor and onto Mordor. Merry was captured by orcs on the border of  Rohan but escaped and met the ancient guardian of the forest - Treebeard. The relationship he and Pippin struck with Treebeard would prove crucial in the wars to follow. Eventually Merry became an esquire to King Theoden and unknown to the King joined the riders of Rohan as they rode south to Gondor. Here Merry played a vital role in the war when the Nazgul attacked the riders in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and he fought with the Witch King of Angmar. Merry was wounded in battle and saved by Aragorn's healing skills. After the war of the ring was over Merry was knighted by King Eomer of Rohan for his bravery in battle. He returned north to his beloved Shire where he became a legend due to his extra height and physical strength, after drinking too much water from the Entwash when in the company of Treebeard.
