Pippin is a character in the book who grows as the story unfolds. His early roles are comedic and entertaining. He is a reluctant participant in the trip and misses his regular meals and home comforts. The trip to Rivendell is arduous but he survives and is ready to return to the Shire. But Gandalf sees something in this young hobbit and takes him south with the other members of the Fellowship in their quest to destroy the One Ring. In the caves of Moria, Pippin drops a rock down a well which awakens some nasty locals - a mix of cave trolls, orcs and a dark creature from the deeps of time. Gandalf berates Pippin "you fool of a took". On the border of Rohan he is captured by Orcs along with Merry but they escape and retreat into Fangorn Forest where they meet Treebeard. Pippin drinks the Ent-draughts along with Merry which cause them to grow in height. At the Tower of Orthanc, Pippin can't resist looking into the palantir that was cast mistakenly from the tower and in it he sees the all seeing eye of Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor. Gandalf decides he needs to pay closer attention to Pippin and the two ride south to Gondor. Here Pippin enters the court of Denethor II, the Steward of Gondor and becomes a guard of the citadel. He rescues the injured Faramir from his fathers madness. Later he joined the army that attacked the border of Mordor and distracts Sauron, which gives the ring bearers a chance to enter Mordor unseen. Pippin survives the battle after slaying a huge troll and is knighted by the King for his bravery. He returns to the Shire as an older and wiser hobbit where he leads the battle to remove the villains who have taken over the Shire in their absence.
