This is a series based on the ancient Irish townland system and while the places chosen may seem a little random, they all mean something to me. This cache is placed close to the centre of the townland.
A 35mm film cannister with only a log so BYOP and parking is available nearby. Please return exactly where found.
The Townland of Tullyvallan is in the Parish of Newtownhamilton in the Barony of Fews Upper in The County Of Armagh.
The name probably comes from the Gaelic name 'Tulaigh Mhalainn' which means 'Hill of the Peak'.
It measures 4661.75 acres making it the largest townland in County Armagh and the 13th largest in Ireland.
It is bordered by Clady Beg, Ballintemple, Carrickacullion, Camly (Macullagh), Tullyvallan (Hamilton) East, Tullyvallan (Tipping) West, Tullyvallan (Hamilton) West, Cullyhanna Big, Skerriff (Trueman), Skerriff (Tichburn), Altnamackan, Cortamlat and Armaghbrague.
Features include the whole town of Newtownhamilton.
Tullyvallan has been chosen because Newtownhamilton is my home town. I went to the Primary School, the Presbyterian Youth Fellowship and Youth Club, the Farmer's Mart (sadly gone), the Ulster Bank (sadly gone), Maggies shop (sadly... you get the idea!), Esther's hairdressers (yes... it too) and the Tasty Palace Chinese takeaway! Its still there and still one of best Chinese takeaways in the country (in my opinion!). My father also owns a few fields here and there around the outskirts of Newtownhamilton and I have many stressful memories of herding cattle through the town from one field to the other!
