This cache was set with a few other caches on Sugar Island. A friend of our family [Carolyn] showed me some sites and history/stories of the spots. The island has its own way of life and unique history. Our family has been going there for 40+ years and still learn new history stories. You are required to take your vehicle over by ferry so you will have a round trip fee. You pay leaving the mainland but not coming off the island
This site named Sugar Island Access is on the Lake George side of the Island. The land you see from the launch is Ontario ,Canada. Governer Williams of Michigan wanted to show how close we are to Canada. He came to the island and stood on the shore and threw a half dollar across the water to Canada. In earlier days the Sugar Island men would wait till the water froze ,hook up the wagons and horses and cross to trade with the Indians on the reservation in Canada. With the close proximity you see warnings from the border patrol to report any out of the ordinary behavior.
