In the Great Flood of 1993 both the Mississippi and Missouri River reached a high water point that was recorded along with the date and other information. An engraved stone was later placed at the high water mark with this information so that guests to Old St. Charles as well as people like you could apreciate all the hard work that the City Staff and citizens put into fighting The Great Flood.
High water marks are often used to record the highest point of a body of water, most commonly during floods. This high water mark of 39.9 feet was taken during the flood of '93. "The Great Flood" as many called it, occured from April to October, making it one of the the most dangerous and costly natural disasters in the United States. The flood caused over $15 Billlion in damges, destroyed more than 100,000 homes, and claimed the lives of more than 32 people.
While still considered one of the most horrific and tragic floods the United States has ever known, millions were relieved to hear news that the flood waters were dropping around early October. However even months later, once the water had retreated, several were left homelesss or in ruin. While water was no longer present, the flood had ruined farmland, swept away homes, and left large amounts of sand everywhere it had been.
To this day the Great Flood of 1993 is considered one of the biggest disasters that we have faced and conquered. If you get an opprotunity to read even more into detail on this historic event, I highly recommend it.

1.) We rebuilt a lot after the great flood. Do you think we learned from our mistakes or no? Do you think if another "great flood" we're to occur, it would cause more or less damage?
2.) Look at the nearby earth and soil. Do you see any remains of sand left behind? If so how much?
3.) The terrain and culture of this area has changed since the flood. If the water were to rise to this height again do you think there would be an effort to rebuild again?
4.) Do you think the odds of another "great flood" are likely or unlikely? Compared to the one of '93, what events would need to occur?
