>Close to the airport of Smithton is Mella, an area of rich farmland much of which has been reclaimed from swamp. Many rivers wind through spectacular Beech forests and undulating farmlands. The local economy is based on dairy farming and timber. The Lacrum Cheese factory and tourist farm, Is established on 27 acres, the farm produced a range of soft cheeses from the 500 cows they farm. Being the first place to produce Mella Cheese. The geocache is placed at the beginning of the abandonded cheese facotry. When draining farmland, the fossilized remains of giant marsupials were discovered by astonished farmers. This is what Mella remains primarily noted for. The bones have been identified as over 40000 years old. They include the remains of a giant wombat, a marsupial rhinoceros and a giant kangaroo. These finds prove that Tasmania was once joined to mainland Australia.
