Geocache Description:

This cache celebrates the third anniversary for happy_wife and webscouter. It is the fourth cache in our historical church series. This church is special to us as it is our home church. We call it silly lovebirds because of all the times we find ourselves laughing at silly things. Special thanks to Kathy C. for her help in the creation of this cache.

Fellowship Greenwood has a history going back to October 14, 1837. This makes it one of the oldest churches in the area. It was originally founded by John Jackson, Joab Powell and James Savage as Union Baptist Church, and had a membership of 10 people. After meeting in member's cabins a log meeting house was built in 1839 at the present location of Union Baptist Cemetery. After meeting for many years in the log meeting house, which had undergone remodeling when the members "sawed out one end and made more room", the congregation built a frame meeting house in 1950.

Just two years later a brick church was built nearby. In a description from 1937 Miss Delma Carpenter described the church

..both buildings faced the south and this one had two front doors with several steps leading up to a small platform in front of each door. All the men entered the building by one door and all the women by the other. The seats were arranged with a row of long ones in the center and a row of short ones on either side. In the front was a small platform where the minister stood, and around the platform was a curtain over which one could see only the head and shoulders of the minister.

The brick church was taken down brick by brick in 1872 and was rebuilt at the corner of Second and Chestnut streets during that year and 1873. By March 1879 the site of the old Union Church was now the Union Baptist Cemetery. In 1886 a belfry was added to the brick church. The bell from that belfry now sits in front of the current building.

The church installed acetylene lights in 1908 and in 1917 electric lights were installed in the old brick church.

In November 1879 a vote was held to purchase an organ but the vote was lost. In 1882 another vote was taken and as a result a new organ was purchased. This caused such an uproar that several members of the church refused to come to church on days it was used for service. In 1915 the old organ was sold to Powell School.

On August 29th, 1937 a centennial celebration was held with an all day service and a basket dinner. Two hundred and sixty people signed the register.

On August 8th, 1956 a vote was held to change the name of the church to First Baptist Church of Greenwood. Ten years later in September of 1966 plans were made to move the church to the present location. By March of 1968 the first service was conducted in the present building in what is now the east wing of the building. After outgrowing the sanctuary in the east wing the church decided to build the sanctuary that is now in use. The groundbreaking ceremony was in February 1979 and the first service was conducted on October 28th, 1979.

In 2011 after several years of declining membership the leadership of the church agreed to become a satellite church of Lenexa Baptist Church. The church went through a remodel to update the building, landscape the property and in August of 2011 it reopened as Fellowship Greenwood.

Placement of the cache has been approved by Pastor Chris Williams.
