Welcome to Ålesund!
This is the third in my series of Ålesund city tourist caches. Ålesund is visited by a lot of tourists every year, especially from cruise ships such as Hurtigruten and so forth.
If you visit all caches in this series, you'll experience a big portion of Ålesund city.
It would be great if as many nationalities as possible will visit and log this cache!
Do you find the cache? Take good care of it and place it back in exactly the same position. Happy caching in Ålesund city!
(Stealth required. Bring your own pencil.)
Aspøy school
This cache is placed close to Aspøy school, one of the most historical buildings of Ålesund city. The presidency of Ålesund decided to build this magnificent school in May 1918. They started building it in 1919, and the school was finished in 1922.
The school is monumentally built, in a Nordic neo-baroque style.
In 1922 the school had 31 classrooms, and there were made premises for a dental clinic, school doctor, dining hall and school kitchen. They also built a bath with a swimming pool in the basement.
During the Second World War (WWII), the school was hit by bombs several times. In May 1942 the Germans occupied the whole school, using it for accommodation and warehouse until the end of the war in 1945. The school was fully repaired in 1951.
