Geocache Description:

This Old school bus stop is set in a wonderful park with many huge trees and a play area. This cache touches one of those past places living with us in the present.

The Terminus is the end of the Glenwood Route. This route ran from the centre of Town turning up Bath Road and into what was McDonald Road (now Alan Paton Road). The route would end at this building, where the vehicle – Bus, Trolley or earlier Tram, would turn around and reverse the journey. The Terminus consisted of toilets, waiting areas and a large clock. As can be seen, all that remains is the structure sans clock.

Early records refer to horse drawn Trams before 1900. In 1902 Trams powered by electricity were introduced, and they were refined and upgraded, eventually being called Trolleys or Trolley Buses, until they were done away with in 1968. The Diesel Motor Buses were used instead.

The Trolley bus was popular because the windows could be opened all the way down to the seat base. Two steel bars prevented one from falling out the open window, but the air flowing through was refreshing. The other popular attraction of these trolley buses was their silence. Locals called them 'Silent Death' for this reason. The Durban assembled Trolley Bus was put into service in 1934. It was the largest of it's kind in use throughout the Commonwealth, but the really unique fact is that Durban Trolleys were the only units worldwide to have built in fishing rod racks, for housing fishing rods at the back of the vehicle!
