The legend of Brownbeard is a twisted tale. A distant cousin of the notorious Blackbeard, who was a notorious pirate that plundered the Caribbean and the eastern seaboard of the USA, Brownbeard instead sailed the South Pacific.
Rumour has it that Brownbeard based himself in Niue, and legends tell of wild adventures throughout the South Pacific. Some say he sailed the seas in a mighty warship crewed by a hundred or more, and some say it was a dinghy with a sheet for a sail, nobody knows for sure.
Stories passed down through generations tell of a mighty horde of treasure hidden somewhere on Niue, the spoils of Brownbeard's adventures - and to this day it has never been uncovered.
What is rumoured is that the Togo Chasm was named by Brownbeard - it is said that Brownbeard declared that "it's a great place togo" and that anyone visiting Niue "has togo there".
