Geocache Description:

Windsor, Nova Scotia, is known as the Little Town of Big Firsts. This cache highlights an important part of the history of this town: Howard Dill's Atlantic Giant Pumpkins

Dill's Atlantic Giant Pumpkins

While pumpkin weigh-off competitions have long since been a staple of fall fairs, things changed forever in the early 1980’s when the late Howard Dill of Windsor appeared on the scene. He was the developer/originator of the Atlantic Giant variety of pumpkins and his ginormous gourds tipped the scales in record-breaking fashion. Howard Dill was a four-time world champion grower, and his Atlantic Giant is considered to be the granddaddy of all giant pumpkins today. It is common for this variety to produce 400-500lb fruit and the present-day record is, incredibly, over 2000lb. A popular Canadian news magazine called Howard Dill "The most famous man in the giant pumpkin world.”

The pumpkin-growing tradition continues to this day by the Dill family and a visit to the pumpkin patch in the fall of the year is a must-do for young and old alike.

And what happens to some of these amazingly-huge pumpkins? Since 1999, they have been hollowed out and paddled across Lake Pesaquid during the Windsor Pumpkin Regatta in October each year!

The town of Windsor has several locations that celebrate its pumpkin and hockey heritage.

Thank you to Mr. Danny Dill for permission to hide this cache on his property. Dill Farm and Long Pond are open to the public seven days a week during daylight hours and there is no admission fee.

You are looking for a giant bison tube at this winter-friendly park and grab.
